Trained as a hot-metal compositor for five years in the 1960s, then progressed to proofreading and copy-preparation, specializing in technical and foreign-language work. Became an official at the EC Publications Office where I oversaw proofreading and copy-preparation of EC legal publications throughout Europe. Made deputy head of EC legal publications, overseeing the work of almost 100 proofreaders of nine different nationalities for printing houses in all EC member countries. Drew up and marked entrance examinations for freelance proofreaders wishing to work for the EC Commission. Since leaving the EC in 1981 I have undertaken copy preparation and proofreading work on a freelance basis.
